Insive Indonesian Sustainable Initiative
Development of social and environmental projects for natural climate solutions in Indonesia.
About
Insive is a foundation that delivers socio-environmental projects on the ground. We map a landscape's potential, plant and restore ecosystems, work alongside local people, and report results with data that can be verified.
Insive grew out of Ailesh, an energy and environmental consultancy working in the field since 2018. That work taught us that a company's sustainability plan only matters when someone carries it out with local people, over years, and records every result.

Vision
To align ecological integrity with community restoration, so that biodiversity and social justice become the foundation of global sustainability.
Mission
- Develop blue carbon, forestry and socio-biodiversity projects through community-centred landscape approaches.
- Join ecosystem conservation with sustainable livelihoods.
- Bring communities, civil society, business, academia and government into the same programme.
- Build frameworks to measure environmental and social outcomes, and learn from them.
- Strengthen local capacity so grassroots actors lead the management of their own ecosystems.
Why now
Indonesia has committed to net zero by 2060. Forestry and land use carry the largest share of the national emissions target, so forests, mangroves and community-managed land will decide whether it is met.
- 1,145MtCO₂e
Indonesia's greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, the reference year of its Second NDC.
- 2060
Indonesia's net zero target year, or sooner.
- 3.36million ha
Indonesia's mangrove area, the largest of any country.

- Carbon markets are out of reach for communities.
Technical methodologies and certification costs keep them out.
- Many CSR programmes cannot show results.
Planning, research and delivery happen in isolation.
- Companies need credible delivery partners.
ESG and decarbonisation targets are tightening, and measurable nature-based project developers are still few.
How we work
Companies usually move through four stages on the way to net zero. We can join at any of them.
- Measure Establish the emissions and carbon stock baseline with IoT sensors, software and field surveys.
- Reduce Build a realistic decarbonisation strategy for the company's operations.
- Offset Develop nature-based projects and open access to carbon markets for emissions that cannot yet be avoided.
- Report Record outcomes through Digital MRV and platform reporting, ready for third-party verification.
Working principles
- Start from community assets.
Programmes follow Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), building on what a village already has.
- Consent from the start.
Every project goes through Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) with the community.
- Results that can be checked.
Field data is recorded with methods aligned to SRN PPI and Verra standards.
Services
Three services that run on their own or together in one programme.
Scope: Industrial plantation forest, timber and non-timber forest products, REDD+, blue carbon
- Baseline assessment and planning
- Nursery and planting
- Carbon certification and community capacity building
Our network of local volunteers assesses beneficiaries directly before a programme begins. Programmes run in three stages:
- Co-design and opportunity mapping. Map the village's assets and potential, then design the programme with community partners.
- Action and accountability. Periodic reviews and media coverage so funders and local stewards see the same data.
- Transformation and reporting. A full report on what changed and how ready the community is to continue on its own.
Forest management and Digital MRV are delivered with Archeda, Inc. (Japan). Carbon credit pipeline:
- Preliminary review
- Baseline assessment
- Area mapping
- Carbon accounting
- Reporting
- Verification support
Where we work
We work in two landscapes that hold the most carbon and support the most people.
Coast
Mangroves and blue carbon
Mangroves store carbon in their trunks, roots and sediment. They hold back erosion and sustain coastal fisheries.
6–8 tCO₂e/ha/year
Inland
Tropical forests and landscapes
We work on forest conservation (REDD+), plantation forestry and non-timber forest products that give communities an income.
1.5–10 tCO₂e/ha/year
In the field

Ranges vary by site, stand age and method.
Programmes
Programmes we run, or have run, with communities and partners.
Natural resource management
Managing land and coastal areas with a focus on forest carbon, blue carbon and REDD+.
Social enterprise
CSR programmes built on recorded field activity that generates income for communities.
| Programme | Pillar | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Flora and fauna inventory and monitoring in conservation areas | Natural resources | Research |
| Captive breeding and conservation of protected rare birds | Natural resources | Conservation |
| Rare plant nursery support | Natural resources | Conservation |
| Mount Lawu orchid exploration | Social enterprise | Research |
| Wood ear mushroom cultivation training | Social enterprise | Training |
| Nusantara orchid tissue culture training | Social enterprise | Training |
| Honey bee cultivation, jug method | Social enterprise | Livelihoods |
| Weed control with biopesticides | Social enterprise | Agriculture |
Part of our budget is set aside for research and pilot projects in blue carbon, carbon storage, forest conservation (REDD+) and collateral fund partnerships.
